Two learners can have the same diagnosis and still look very different in the classroom.
One pupil with ADHD may be constantly on the move, while another may appear quiet and distracted. One autistic learner may find noise overwhelming, while another may be more affected by changes in routine or communication demands.
A diagnosis can give us useful information, but it does not tell us everything about the child.
In the Classroom
• Avoid assuming that all learners with the same diagnosis have the same needs.
• Ask what helps this particular learner.
• Notice individual strengths, triggers and patterns.
• Use a diagnosis as a guide, not a complete description of the learner.
The Prophet ﷺ dealt with people according to their individual circumstances and needs. He did not apply one rigid approach to everyone.
As educators, this reminds us that understanding the learner comes before simply understanding the label.
